The Tamilnadu Dr.M.G.R. Medical University (TANMMU) being the mother Medical university holds the responsibility to initiate requisite action to establish a virtual library for the benefit of its user community. The Tamilnadu Dr.M.G.R. Medical University(TNMMU) has already received adequate funds from the State and Central Governments plus its own funds to initiate this project. As a first step, towards this is the preparation of the proposal to establish a Virtual Library to be placed before the Committee. On approval of this proposal, the Medical Informatics Centre was upgraded as a Digital Library in 2002, later as Virtual Library in 2005 with the adequate assistance of the Government of India.
Virtual Library would facilitate:
Access to valuable Medical databases. The user need not physically be present in the library to access virtual library. Uniform opportunity for rural & urban community to have access to latest information. The user can search, view, save & print the information. Access the Research papers & thesis abstract. Access the invention /developments/updates in the relevant fields. Information can be made available at an affordable cost. The academic activities can be accessed.
The library material are available at the user’s desktop, regardless of where the user is physically located. It saves and / or reduces the physical space taken up by library material. It allows for the inclusion of materials only available on digital format.
