MEDICAL INFORMATICS CENTRE  OF REGIONAL MEDICAL LIBRARY

The Medical Informatics Centre, for health professionals, was started its functioning on 2nd December 1992.   It was started on the mark of revolution brought about by the advent of Information Technology.  The main components of this technology, namely computers, communications and structured data have undergone a sea change.  The arrival of the rapid technological changes has led to a new dimension.  Data has become more amenable for access, easy for presentation and understanding

        These changes in Information Technology have had salutary effects in medicine.  This new development has led to the arrival of knowledge-based systems for our understanding of complex processes and management has become easily possible.  It is therefore essential that, the understanding of the new tools which are causing this revolution is acquired by the up and coming younger generations.

                 The prime aim of the Medical Informatics Centre is to update the knowledge and reckon new ideas and technologies among medical fraternity.  The services provided by the Medical Informatics Centre are extremely useful to doctors, research scholars, scientists and Para medical students.  More than 2000 students/research scholars are using these facilities and around 1300 Health

Science topics are retrieved and 52000 references are searched in the Centre.

          This centre provides three major kinds of services

ON-LINE SERVICE:  (MEDLARS)

             MEDLARS Service at Medical Informatics Centre is an ON LINE Service, accessible through Internet.  Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System (MEDLARS) is one of the world’s largest medical bibliographical databases, consisting of millions of medical reference in each database.  On line facility is to access a lot of databases such as MEDLINE, AIDS DRUG TRIAL, POPLINE, ADONIS etc. and has been made feasible.  Medlars Service is also accessible through Micro Earth Station and a satellite to the Indian Medlars Centre, New Delhi. 

CD ROM SERVICE

                CD ROM SERVICE - in off Line facility, the following databases are available in CD ROM format.

i)                    MEDLINE

ii)                  DRUG INFORMATION FULL TEXT

iii)                INTERNATIONAL PHARMACEUTICAL ABSTRACTS

iv)                CINAHL(CUMULATIVE INDEX TO NURSING & ALLIED HEALTH LITERATURE)

             The search fee for MEDLINE, CINAHL and INTERNATIONAL PHARMACEUTICAL ABSTRACT will be Rs.75/- (Rupees Seventy Five only) per topic for a maximum of 40 abstracts (including postage).  Re.1/- extra for each additional abstract.

            The search fee for DRUG INFORMATION FULL TEXT will be Rs.10/-(Rupees Ten only) per article (in person) and Rs.25/- (Rupees Twenty five only) per article (by post).   

 MODE OF PAYMENT: By means of a Demand Draft, in favor of the Registrar of this University.

 INTERNET

               Internet is the recent and interesting development on the Computer.  Internet is a huge Network of Networks that spans the globe. Internet was opened through 64  KB  leased  line at a cost of Rs.22 lakhs.

               There are 10 ports in the University which are open for services. These are being used by the faculty of the University, outside faculty, research scholars and scientists and students for various advantageous reasons.  It has come as a boon to very many practicing clinicians in that they are able to obtain the latest and most recent information and knowledge in their fields of interest and also exchange these with worldwide counterparts  by the use chat rooms.  Using this, our University exchanges the syllabus internationally and also finds out about syllabus systems used in the other Universities world wide.  It has become a resource, for teaching medical students for clinical practice and continuing medical education with the up to date information available in the internet.  Internet facilitates to send E-mail globally and also aids in the publication of the examination results.  Besides University Departments, per data more than 10 to 15 users are using the internet.

 BROWSING CHARGES: Rs.30/- is charged for an hour of browsing.

 DIGITAL LIBRARY

            The Regional Medical Library has formed a Digital Library in the Medical Informatics Centre and that centre has been aided by the Government of India and started its functioning on 15.01.2002.

             Many data bases, books, journals, study materials etc. are available in the Electronic Format to make the search and to retrieve the information effectively in a short time.
